The series's illustrator Brett Helquist returned to illustrate another release of the series in paperback form, made to mimic the penny dreadful — a common nineteenth-century British publication that was usually released in parts, each of which cost a penny — thematically appropriate for the Baudelaire's "dreadful" situations. The books had altered titles of "Or...," new colour covers, seven new illustrations within the story from Brett Helquist, fake advertisements for products such as electric sock, and a section of a 13-part comic series at the back of the book starring The Spoily Brats. The first two books, The Bad Beginning and The Reptile Room, were released on the same date in May 2007, and The Wide Window was released in September of the same year. The fourth and fifth books, The Miserable Mill and The Austere Academy, were set to be published, but for reasons unknown, they were not released. It is unknown if the series will ever be completed and is considered on indefinite leave.
