A compilation of the words used by Sunny Baudelaire (and, in few instances, Beatrice Baudelaire II[1]) in baby-language, as well as their definitions, sources, and possible allusions.

2004 film

Sunny's language is translated via subtitles in the Georgia font, with slight shadow, and in the #f2e2d4 off-white color.

She tends to contribute less in conversations, and uses her speech mainly to deliver sassy remarks or one-liners. As such, she doesn't have very many lines in the film.

  • Unlike the books, "Delmo" translates to "Someone's been to crazy town."

Netflix Series

Sunny's language is translated via subtitles in the Caslon Antique font, in the #31dd3d green color.

Sunny once again is usually limited to sassy remarks, but contributes more to conversations than in the film.

Her phrases are much longer in Season One than in the following two; in Seasons Two and Three, her subtitles usually read short or one-word responses. In Season Three, she starts speaking her lines as well, though they remain subtitled until Chapter Fourteen.

Season 1

  • Unlike the books, "Delmo" translates to "Crazy Aunt Josephine."
  • In "A Bad Beginning: Part Two", Sunny uses the exclamation "Oy!", a word that originates in Yiddish, which is relevant to her Jewish background.
  • In "The Wide Window: Part One", Sunny refers to Uber, a ridesharing company originating in America.

Season 2

Season 3

  • Unlike in the books, Sunny literally says "Mata Hari" and "Rosebud", instead of using them as allusions, in "The Slippery Slope: Part Two."
  • Unlike in the books, Sunny literally says "Scalia", instead of using it as an allusion, in "The Penultimate Peril: Part Two."
  • All of Sunny's lines are subtitled until the "Chapter Fourteen" segment, in which she has two unsubtitled lines: "Cake" and "Happy Birthday."

Trivia

  • In the books, the language seems exclusive to Sunny Baudelaire and Beatrice Baudelaire II, and only Violet and Klaus seem able to understand.
  • In the Netflix series, it is implied that Fiona may have once spoken it, or that it is very common among babies, as Fernald is able to understand and translate for Sunny,[5][6][7] most likely due to the age gap between him and Fiona and the fact he would've had to translate for her.[8]
    • However, in the Netflix show, the infant Beatrice does not use subtitles/babytalk.[9]
