|“||He's a nice enough man, but we don't have much in common.||”|
Baron von Pendle is the nephew of the man who invented the swingset, and thus was very wealthy. Tatiana Cozy describes him as a "nice enough man." He is noted to be an insomniac, and would often spend the night on his porch swing and watching the Gobi Pier.
Thomasina Cozy arranged for him to marry her daughter, Tatiana, and while he was very eager to marry her, Tatiana did not feel that they had much in common and did not wish to be his wife. However, her mother, excited for the two moving-seat families to move together, would not listen to her.
The Baron then began seeing what he believed to be Tatiana walking along the Gobi Pier at midnight. He was disturbed by this, as he did not want to marry another insomniac. After seeing her for nine nights in a row, Thomasina called in Lemony Snicket to solve the case, believing the mysterious figure to be a demon.
- His surname may be a reference to the Pendle witch trials, among the most famous witch trials in English history.
