The Devil's Tongue Knot is a type of knot that seems to exist in the universe of A Series of Unfortunate Events.
History[]
The Devil's Tongue Knot is said to be invented by Female Finnish Pirates in the fifteenth century, named for its complicated twisting.[1]
It was used notably by Violet Baudelaire several times- firstly when she tied cloth together to make a Grappling Hook. When she tied a rope (out of extension cords, curtain pulls and neckties) to travel down the elevator of 667 Dark Avenue, she also taught her siblings, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire, how to tie the knot.[2] She later tied a cord to a faucet with the knot in order to escape Heimlich Hospital with her siblings,[3] and then used it to hold the Freaks' Caravan to Count Olaf's car.
After the rope was cut by Kevin, Violet decided that the Devil's Tongue Knot had not brought them much luck, so she created her Sumac Knot in order to better help them.[4] However, she did default to the Devil's Tongue in order to tie a drag chute to the boat atop the Hotel Denouement.[5]
Formation[]
While the exact formation of the Devil's Tongue Knot is unknown, it is stated to twist "this way and that, in a most complicated and eerie way."[1] It is said to be incredibly useful, and incredibly strong- noted to be strong enough that usually it would take a long while for a knife to saw through it.[6]
Netflix Series Divergent Canon[]
The Devil's Tongue Knot is not named until "The Austere Academy: Part Two," when Violet ties a rope to a faux-Sunny for Duncan and Isadora Quagmire to use. She also does not replace it with the Sumac Knot.
