Hangfire disguised as the butler.

At the beginning of Who Could That Be at This Hour?, Hangfire is said to be hiding out in Stain'd-by-the-Sea. When Lemony Snicket and S. Theodora Markson arrive at the Sallis Mansion, Hangfire is disguised as a butler. He is good at imitating the voices of others, as he imitates the voices of Lemony Snicket, Ellington Feint, Moxie Mallahan, and Mr. Mallahan. He has captured Ellington Feint's father (Armstrong Feint), and told her that she will never see him again.

In order to get his hands on the Bombinating Beast, he first sends a telegram to the Mallahans, requesting to buy it. When this plan fails, he hires Dame Sally Murphy to work for him and nearly drowns her in the basement of the Sallis Mansion. She, however, says that "he" referring to Hangfire, is the only person who can help her. He also hires Lemony and Theodora to steal the Bombinating Beast from the Mallahans at the request of Dame Sally Murphy. After Prosper Lost foolishly allows him to enter the Far East Suite, he ties S. Theodora Markson to her bed in The Lost Arms. She says that he tells her he is going to kill her, and then depicts him as terrible, despicable, and loathsome.

Near the end of the book, Ellington reveals that she has been tracking Hangfire for sometime, and he has kidnapped many people in order to get what he wants, including her father. Ellington makes off with the Bombinating Beast in search of him.

When Did You See Her Last?

WindowBreak

Hangfire disguised as Colonel Colophon.

In When Did You See Her Last?, Hangfire, along with Dr. Flammarion and Nurse Dander, drug Cleo Knight's parents in order to kidnap Cleo. He takes over Colophon Clinic and prepares the rooms to hold many children. He then murders Colonel Colophon via defenestration and disguises his voice and wraps himself in bandages in an attempt to trick Lemony. After a small fight, he leaps out of a window and runs off.

Shouldn't You Be In School?

When Lemony, Moxie, Jake, and Cleo go to the Department of Education, the Department of Truancy finds them and captures Moxie, Jake, and Cleo. The two people who get out of the Department of Truancy car are Sharon Haines and another unnamed man, presumably Hangfire. When the students of Wade Academy go to Partial Foods to steal honeydew melons, Lemony is hiding in a side alley watching. Stew Mitchum and another man (presumably Hangfire) approach him, and they tell him that they will not hesitate to kill Lemony, before they beat him up. In both instances Hangfire is not directly mentioned, but rather in Lemony's retrospection.

Why Is This Night Different from All Other Nights?

In Why Is This Night Different from All Other Nights? he falls down and his mask comes off. He is revealed to be Armstrong Feint, Ellington's father. He is killed by Lemony when he pushes Hangfire into the mouth of the Bombinating Beast which Snicket summoned by blowing through the paper patch on the statue.
