HarperCollins Publishers LLC began as J. & J. Harper, a small family printing shop in New York run by brothers James and John Harper beginning in 1817. The company posted an advertisement in the United States Literary Gazette in 1825 announcing five forthcoming titles which helped get them off the ground. Collins also began as a small family-owned printing and publishing shop. Chalmers and Collins established by millworkers and seminarians named William Collins and Charles Chalmers, publishing their first work in 1819. It began by publishing only the writings of Charles' brother Reverend Dr. Thomas Chalmers, but soon branched out to other authors, eventually becoming William Collins and Sons.

In 1962, what was then Harper & Brothers merged with the textbook publisher Row, Peterson & Company, forming Harper & Row. A company called News Corporation purchased Harper & Row in 1987 and Collins in 1989, forming the HarperCollins that we know and love today.
