"In the Reptile Room" is the second track on The Tragic Treasury. It is performed by The Gothic Archies. It coincides with the book The Reptile Room.

Lyrics[]

In the reptile room
Where the baby screams
Weirder creatures loom
Than in all of your dreams
In the reptile room
Hither and thither
Creatures from Khartoum
Slither anywhither
In the reptile room
Anacondas dance
Will they be our doom?
Will we be their bon-bons?
And you wanna know
Wanna know, wanna know
Why I frown?
Well, I'm smiling
I'm just smiling upside-down
In the reptile room
There’s an evil man
In a strange costume
Do not ride in his van
In the reptile room
Are pythons at play
In the murky gloom?
What a horrible day!

References to A Series of Unfortunate Events[]

  • In the Reptile Room
  • Where the baby screams
  • Weirder creatures loom
Than in all of your dreams
    • "But as remarkable as the room itself was, what was inside the Reptile Room was much more exciting[...] There were all sorts of snakes, naturally, but there were also lizards, toads, and assorted other animals that the children had never seen before, not even in pictures, or at the zoo[...] Some of the creatures looked friendly, and some of them looked scary, but all of them looked fascinating, and the Baudelaires took a long, careful look at each one, with Klaus holding Sunny up so she could see."[1]
  • Creatures from Khartoum
    • Khartoum is the capital city in Sudan. It is implying that Uncle Monty's reptiles come from all over the globe.[2]
  • Will they be our doom?
    Will we be their bon-bons?
    • The Baudelaires have a slight worry about some of the more dangerous reptiles in the reptile room, though Uncle Monty assures them that they are kept securely locked and will not harm them if they are handled correctly.
    • As well as this, Monty's death is framed on one of his snakes.
  • And you wanna know
    Wanna know, wanna know
    Why I frown?
    Well, I'm smiling
    I'm just smiling upside-down
    • A line that brings the mixture of comedy and tragedy famous to the book series into play.
  • There’s an evil man
    In a strange costume
Do not ride in his van
    • Referring to Count Olaf in disguise as Stephano, dressed in a costume that fools Monty but not the Baudelaires. He later attempts to kidnap the Baudelaires after murdering Monty, forcing them at knifepoint into his van to drive them to the dock.
  • Are pythons at play
    In the murky gloom?
    • Once again referencing the framing of Monty's death on the reptiles.
  • What a horrible day!
    • The last seven chapters of the book take place over one day- the Baudelaires discover Monty has been murdered, are kidnapped by Olaf, are in a car crash, are not believed by Arthur Poe about Olaf, have to prove he was the murderer, and then are helpless as he and Fernald escape.

Details in the Song[]

Each song in the treasury has a tune, effects, vocals, background details, and/or rhythm that makes each track unique.

  • There is a heavier bass rhythm in this song
  • There seem to be unusual sound effects peppered into the song as if to give a foreign, weird, and unfamiliar feeling to it, like the Baudelaire's experience of being with this new guardian and surrounded by strange snakes and reptiles.
