James Michael "Jim" Dooley (born August 22, 1976) is an American film score composer, who composed the music for the Netflix adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Biography[]

Jim Dooley is an Emmy Award-winning composer/songwriter with a diverse repertoire spanning the film, television, video gaming and live theatrical industries. He has earned accolades for his solo work as well as proud collaborations with many of the top names in music, from Hans Zimmer, Kristin Chenoweth to Babyface.

Dooley is currently scoring TNT’s hit drama “The Last Ship” with collaborator James S. Levine. He recently emerged into the Sports industry with his theme for the 2015 Senior PGA Championship, which can be heard on both NBC and the Golf Channel. Jim is currently the composer for “Lemony Snicket’s: A Series of Unfortunate Events” on Netflix, and the new live-action “Kim Possible” movie coming to The Disney Channel in 2019.

2014 was a busy year for Jim as he scored famed author Nicholas Sparks’ first television event for Lifetime titled “Deliverance Creek.” Two projects featuring Jim’s music were also honored with Academy Award nominations, the animated short “Maggie Simpson in The Longest Daycare”, and the live-action short “The Buzkashi Boys”.

In Television, Dooley has written original music for FX’s quirky series “Wilfred,” NBC’s “Mockingbird Lane & “Best Friends Forever,” CW’s “Emily Owens, M.D.” TBS’ satirical animated series, “Neighbors from Hell,” and ABC’s critically acclaimed series, “Pushing Daisies,” for which Dooley earned a 2008 Primetime Emmy Award for “Best Original Music Composition for a Series.”

In film, Dooley composed Screen Gems’ thriller “Obsessed” starring Beyoncé Knowles, Simon West’s remake of the cult-classic-thriller “When a Stranger Calls”, and Bahr Productions Inc.’s “The Forger,” starring Hayden Panettiere, Josh Hutcherson, Alfred Molina and Lauren Bacall. Dooley also wrote music for several animated feature scores such as the German animated release “Urmel aus dem Eis” (“Impy’s Island”) and its sequel; DreamWorks Animation’s musically acclaimed short “First Flight,” and worked closely with director Fred Savage on the theatrical sequel “Daddy Day Camp.”

Other projects for DreamWorks include: “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” “Madagascar” and “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa,” its spin-off short “A Christmas Caper,” the Academy Award-winning “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,” and “Operation Got Your 6” featuring First Lady Michelle Obama and the Penguins of “Madagascar.”

Dooley’s expertise in other mediums can be found in the complex, interactive scores for best-selling videogame titles such as “Epic Mickey,” “Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two,” “Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes,” “Infamous” and “Infamous 2,” “NERF: N-Strike”, “Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier,” “SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy Seals,” “U.S. Navy Seals: Combined Assault.”

Dooley is a graduate of New York University, and upon completion of his degree, moved to Los Angeles to study the art of film composing at USC in the SMPTV program with prolific scoring legends Christopher Young, Elmer Bernstein and Leonard Rosenman. He joined Media Ventures (now Remote Control Productions) in 1999 and collaborated with Hans Zimmer on DreamWorks’ “Gladiator” and as an additional composer, arranger and orchestrator on Columbia Pictures’ “The Da Vinci Code,” Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” DreamWorks’ “The Ring,” and many others.[1]
