The Normal Happy Family is a disguise used by Count Olaf, Esmé Squalor, Carmelita Spats, and Fernald, The Hook-Handed Man to try and blend in. The family only appears in Season 3 of the Netflix adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events.
History[]
The Normal Happy Family disguise was arranged in order for Count Olaf to steal/rent a submarine. While Olaf poses as the Dad, a "typical family man," Esmé Squalor portrays the lovely wife (to her chagrin, as she does not find it In), Carmelita Spats is their handsome adorable daughter, and Fernald, due to Count Olaf being mad at him for failing to kill Sunny Baudelaire, is a distant cousin who is dead to him.
At the Submarine Rental, Olaf claims that they are taking a family vacation to the bottom of the sea to hunt orphans, a normal activity that many families do.[1] The family disguise was used again by the group (sans Fernald) at the Hotel Denouement while checking in at the lobby.[2]
Physical Appearance[]
Count Olaf's "Dad" wears a Hawaiian shirt and glasses with his hair combed flat to his forehead. He has a camera around his neck, with brown shorts and socks pulled up to his knees, as well as a fanny pack.
Esmé Squalor's Mom wears a short, orange muumuu dress with a yellow flower pattern, sandal-heels, tinted sunglasses, and has her hair pressed back and curled.
Carmelita Spats's Daughter wears an enormous pink bow in her hair, a pink-and-white striped dress, white leggings, and pink shoes to match the bow.
Fernald's Distant Disowned Cousin wears a dirtied red-striped shirt, jean shorts, tall red socks and black shoes, as well as a gray bucket hat. He also carries a pink floatation device.
