Daniel Handler[1][2], Rose Lam[3] and Barry Sonnenfeld[4][5] were involved in the show as executive producers. However, Daniel Handler's role was mitigated to only writing during the early production of the season.

In January 2017, Daniel Handler reported "working [on season 2] in [his] own dining room with a team of writers [he's] really loving".[1] This writer's room included Handler himself, Aziza Aba Butain, Joshua Conkel, Sigrid Gilmer and Joe Tracz.[6] According to Barry Sonnenfeld in an interview around the same time, scripts were already being written.[5] On May 19th, 2017, the writer's room were done, all the way to "The End", including scripts for season 3.[6]

Barry Sonnenfeld continued to direct this season.[3][5][7]

The series was renewed for a second season on March 13, 2017. Filming for season 2 began on April 13.[7][8] The series is produced in Vancouver by Olaf II Productions Inc.[3]

Filming on The Austere Academy wrapped up on May 17.[9]

Daniel Handler said he hoped Netflix would give the crew the go-ahead to film season 2 back-to-back with season 3. "Our dream is to film season 3 right after season 2; we're still working that out with Netflix. We couldn't have filmed all three seasons in a row... but we're hoping that with the reception the show has been getting, we can film those seasons so that at the end of the series, the Baudelaires aren't in their 30s and we're wondering why they're still worried about their guardians."[2] "[G]iven how quickly young actors age and change, we're trying to film everything as quickly as possible."[1]
