The following is a description of various foodstuffs that appears in the series.

Alphabet Soup

Alphabet Soup is a soup with noodles shaped like letters, found in the Heimlich Hospital Supply Closet. It also contains carrots. In The Hostile Hospital, Klaus uses the soup to help him decipher the anagram "Laura V. Bleediotie" to Violet Baudelaire. The soup is known to be very slippery and the letters break easily.[1]

Aqueous Martinis

An Aqueous Martini is a drink that appeared in The Ersatz Elevator. Jerome and Esmé Squalor drank this drink because it was "in." Though martinis are usually alcoholic, an Aqueous Martini is simply cold water with an olive, served in a fancy glass. Eventually, aqueous martinis became "out." It was replaced by an awful drink called Parsley Soda.[2]

Kit's Salad

Once on a picnic, Kit Snicket suggested to Lemony that a salad of sliced mango, black beans, and chopped celery mixed with black pepper, lime juice, and olive oil would be delicious. Beatrice Baudelaire also made this salad for a fancy luncheon once.

Carrots

A favourite food of Sunny Baudelaire's, she ate a raw Carrot instead of the Conut Cream Cake at Uncle Monty's, she also says that at the Hotel Preludio they ate Carrots for breakfast.

Ceviche

Ceviche was what the people on The Island ate every day for lunch. Beatrice Baudelaire used to make it to celebrate the start of crab season.

Coconut Cream Cake, as served to the Baudelaires.

Coconut Cream Cake was a cake prepared by Uncle Monty in The Reptile Room for the Baudelaires. Mr Poe also sampled the cake, as did Violet and Klaus. Sunny did not, as the cake was too soft for her. In The Grim Grotto, Sunny prepares a coconut cream cake for Violet's birthday.

Cold Cucumber Soup

Aunt Josephine served the Baudelaire children cold cucumber soup soup because she was too afraid to use her stove.[3]

Cranberry Muffins

Cranberry Muffins were served to the Baudelaires by Milt, the owner of Last Chance General Store.

Custard Eclairs

Custard Eclairs were one of the pastries served at the Brunch Picnic of Kit Snicket, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny by the pond in front of Hotel Denouement. It happens to be a favorite of Klaus.[4]

Horseradish

Main Article: Horseradish

Horseradish is a spicy substance that is a cure to Medusoid Mycelium. Beatrice Baudelaire created a hybrid between horseradish and an apple tree. Unfortunately, the hybrid can cause damage to unborn babies, if ingested by the mother; because Kit Snicket was pregnant with Beatrice Snicket, she could not eat the hybrid. Ishmael enjoyed apples from the hybrid.[5]

Lox

Lox is a dish made with smoked salmon. In The Slippery Slope, Sunny prepared this dish for Count Olaf and his troupe, using salmon from the Stricken Stream, and smoke from a Verdant Flammable Device.[6]

Medusoid Mycelium

Main Article: Medusoid Mycelium

The Medusoid Mycelium is a deadly mushroom that grows in the Gorgonian Grotto. Developed by Gregor Anwhistle, this deadly fungus has a unique growth cycle in which it waxes and wanes. The fungus will undergo a brief dormant period in which the mycelium, like a bunch of thread, branching out underneath the ground, is nearly invisible. Then the fungus will begin its flowering stage, quickly and silently sprouting from the ground to full size. When it is time for the next dormant cycle, the fungus will wither away into only its mycelium form. [source needed]

According to the following poem written by a V.F.D. volunteer, if a single Medusoid Mycelium spore is eaten, or even inhaled, it is enough to kill a victim within an hour:

A single spore has such grim power
that you may die within the hour

The spores will plant themselves inside the victim's throat and begin to grow thickly and rapidly inside. The blossoming mycelium will constrict the throat, choking its victim. [source needed]

Onion Soup

The islanders on the The Island have onion soup with a handful of wild grass every evening for supper.

Parsley Soda

Parsley Soda is a drink, featured in The Ersatz Elevator. It is known to taste awful. It became the fashion after the Aqueous Martini. It is unknown whether it is still "in" or not.[2]

Pasta Puttanesca

Pasta Puttanesca is a dish made of noodles, olives, garlic, anchovies, capers, and tomatoes. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire prepare this food for Count Olaf and his theater troupe in The Bad Beginning.[7] Captain Sham claims he ate this meal before the Lachrymose Leeches ate his leg.[3]

Peppermints

It is known that the Baudelaire children are allergic to peppermints.[3]

Pesto Lo Mein

Sunny prepares Pesto Lo Mein from ingredients found in The Grim Grotto.

Salmon Ravioli

Salmon ravioli is a type of pasta served at Café Salmonella.

Salmon Puff

Salmon puffs were served at the in auction, and probably were also served at Café Salmonella.

Seaweed Salad

The Islanders on the Island ate seaweed salad every morning for breakfast.

Wasabi

Wasabi is a very spicy Japanese condiment, often served with fish, that is the cooking equivalent to horseradish. It saved Sunny from the Medusoid Mycelium in The Grim Grotto.[8]

White Beans

White Beans were the food the Baudelaire children brought with them on board the Carmelita.
