"The Miserable Mill: Part Two" is the eighth episode of Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events. It covered the second half of The Miserable Mill.

Official synopsis

Klaus just isn't himself after seeing Dr. Orwell, an optometrist with oddly optimistic patients. Meanwhile, Violet works to clear her parents' names.

Plot

Upon the arrival of Dr. Orwell and Shirley, the Baudelaire children try to convince Sir that Shirley is really Count Olaf in disguise. However, like all of the other adults so far, he doesn't listen to their accusation.

The optometrist and her secretary have come to put their dastardly plan into motion. They will use a hypnotized Klaus to stir up trouble around the Mill. This will cause Sir to kick them out and leave them at the mercy of the Count.

Orwell has been giving the Mill workers "free eye exams" and has been hypnotizing them all these years. The Baudelaires realize that that's why the workers are so mellow and they take it upon themselves to find a cure. In the nick of time, Violet figures out that the words "inordinate" and "fire" will snap Klaus and the workers out of their trance. By saying "inordinate," she manages to prevent Klaus from sawing Charles in half.

Now aware of their poor living and working conditions, the workers begin to revolt. This causes Orwell to trip and fall into the incinerator, while Count Olaf manages to escape with his Hook-handed associate. Nearby, the Quagmire Mansion is burnt down by an unknown assailant, by means of a laser aimed through the window.

Mr. Poe finds the Baudelaires after Dr. Orwell's accident is discovered by his wife, Eleanora, and takes them to Prufrock Preparatory School. Snicket reveals that there they will meet and befriend the Quagmires, who are shown to be sitting just behind them. It is also revealed, by means of an old photograph, that Lemony Snicket and Count Olaf were both former students of the preparatory school.

Lemony Snicket, Count Olaf, Mr. Poe and the Baudelaires then begin singing the song "That's Not How the Story Goes."

Story notes

While the novel gives no dates as to when the events of The Miserable Mill occur, The Penultimate Peril: Part 2 features a copy of the Daily Punctilio on the accident at Lucky Smells Lumbermill, which is labelled as "LOCAL CITY NEWS AUGUST 23 ACCIDENT AT LUCKY SMELL" with the rest of the words cut off, implying that the few days the Baudelaires were at the Lumbermill occurred in late August.

Deviations from the novel

In the TV series, Shirley is introduced earlier with Orwell who both visit the lumbermill. In the books, they stay at their office.
In the book, Shirley's full name is Shirley T. Sinoit-Pécer, which is "receptionist" backwards. In the TV series, it is St. Ives for unknown reasons.
In the books, it is left ambiguous if Sir may have conspired with Georgina Orwell. In the TV series, it is revealed they did conspire as he gets free labor and they split the profits, however, Sir simply thinks that Orwell simply does "weekly eye exams to boost worker morale" instead of hypnotism.
In the books, Violet takes Klaus to Orwell and unknowingly lets him get hypnotized a second time by Orwell. In the TV series, Violet is more cautious and sneaks into Orwell's office with Klaus, and they discover she is hypnotizing Charles.
It is revealed all the workers in the lumbermill are hypnotized, including Phil.
Orwell's swordfight with Sunny is omitted. The reason for this is that during filming according to a writer, Joe Tracz, Presley Smith was teething very bad, so to be sympathetic to the young toddler, they omitted any complex scenes involving using her teeth and used more CGI with the baby than they first anticipated.
Georgina Orwell dies by falling into a furnace after threatening to throw Sunny in, rather than being chopped to pieces in a log chipper.
In the book, Sir and Charles stay at the lumber mill. In the TV series, Sir flees because the workers revolt. Charles decides to search for Sir, leaving the fate of the lumber mill in question.
In the book, because Sir stays, he fires the Baudelaires because he suspects they are bad luck and they have caused trouble for the lumber mill. In the TV series, the Baudelaires must get another guardian because Sir fled.
There is a scene missing in which Shirley and Foreman Flacutono are questioned and they escape after breaking a window. In the TV series, they flee immediately.
