The V.F.D. Headquarters was the penultimate safe place for V.F.D. volunteers until it was eventually burned to the ground. Several pieces of highly valuable information that would later be proven useful to Violet, Klaus Baudelaire and Quigley Quagmire fortunately survived the blaze.

The structure that contained the organization's headquarters was in the Mortmain Mountains in the Valley of Four Drafts, at the base of Mount Fraught. Before its destruction at the hands of the Man With a Beard But No Hair and the Woman With Hair But No Beard, it was said to contain had the following rooms:

  • A kitchen
  • A dining room
  • A parlor
  • A disguise center
  • A movie room
  • A set of stables
  • A gymnasium
  • A training center
  • A garage
  • Six laboratories
  • Dormitories
  • Schoolrooms
  • A lounge
  • A theater
  • A music room
  • A museum
  • An ice cream shop
  • Rehearsal studios
  • Testing centers
  • A swimming pool
  • Bathrooms
  • The grand V.F.D. library

According to a book that Quigley Quagmire once read, there was a mechanism found just outside a large window in the kitchen that turned some of the water extracted from the waterfall at the source of the Stricken Stream into steam. This steam would then rise up and covered the headquarters so it could be covered by mist. In the process, it allows the headquarters to appear invisible to enemies of V.F.D.

The opening party for the new V.F.D. Headquarters[1]

During the events of The Slippery Slope, Violet, Klaus Baudelaire and Quigley Quagmire had entered what once was the headquarters' kitchen through a secret passageway by taking the following steps. First, they found the Vertical Flame Diversion at the back of the cave in the Mortmain Mountains, which once housed both the Volunteer Feline Detectives and the Snow Scouts. Then they climbed up the footholds carved into the side of the Vertical Flame Diversion before they walked down a dim, curving hallway. Afterwards, they entered the correct phrases into the Vernacularly Fastened Door. By the time the trio entered the headquarters, they were disappointed to discover that they were too late, yet they hadn't given up hope.

Now, all that remains of the V.F.D. Headquarters is:

  • a handful of silverware
  • the remnants of a stove and a refrigerator
  • a pile of burnt wood that was probably a dining table
  • a half-melted candelabra
  • various mysterious objects including: a trombone, the pendulum of a grandfather's clock, something that looks either a periscope or a spyglass, an ice cream scoop that has burnt sugar, an iron archway emblazoned with the words "V.F.D. Library," and a "burnt wooden sign marked Poetry".[2]

The Baudelaires and Quigley temporarily settled into the headquarters and later lured Esme Squalor to a trap they built in hopes that they would trade Sunny's freedom for Esme's, though the outcome didn't work as expected.
