Yes! Put the orphans to bed and burn Olaf at the stake!

— a member of the Verhoogen family, The Vile Village

The Verhoogen Family are several residents of the Village of Fowl Devotees.

Biography[]

It's the tattoo!

— a member of the Verhoogen family, The Vile Village

The Verhoogen Family seems to be rich, as they reside in a mansion even in the small, isolated town of the Village of Fowl Devotees.

One of Hector's jobs as handyman, considered a chore, is to polish all of their doorknobs. This job transferred to the Baudelaire orphans during their stay in the town.

After Jacques Snicket's arrest, being mistaken for Count Olaf, a member of the Verhoogen family calls out for the orphans to be put to bed while they burn "Olaf" at the stake. As Snicket is taken away, the family jokes with Mr. Lesko, showing how little they care about the sentencing.

Days later, as the town is chasing escaping Baudelaires, Detective Dupin loses a shoe, and one of the Verhoogens recognizes his tattoo and identifies him as the real Count Olaf.[1]

Trivia[]

  • The family could potentially be named after John Verhoogen, a Belgian-American geologist and geophysicist.
